Stephens County Hospital will invest in new endoscopy equipment.

Monday, the Hospital Authority voted to purchase the new equipment from Pentax at a cost of approximately $158,000.

Stephens County Hospital Administrator Ed Gambrell said the new equipment will replace a system that is about 14 years old.

“For people that have a colonoscopy, an EGD, or any type of scope, these will be new scopes and new equipment that is used for the doctor to visualize the process, as well as to record everything, which they do in case they need to study it later,” he said.

He added the equipment will improve diagnostic capabilities.

“This is digital and course, 14 years ago, you did not have that,” explained Gambrell. “They really are sharp, high-definition pictures.”

Hospital officials said doctors tried equipment from both Pentax and Olympus and preferred the Pentax equipment. In addition, officials added the Pentax equipment had a lower cost.

Approval was unanimous.
