Stephens County Hospital Receives State Funds
The Georgia Department of Community Health Office of Rural Health Services
(ORH) announced Thursday, August 22nd the award of $83,333 to Stephens County
Hospital to assist in the purchase of Emergency Room equipment. Funds will
be available for disbursement by August 29th.
“Ensuring the viability of health care systems in rural
Georgia is essential not only to the health status of our citizens
but the health of our economy,” Governor
Roy Barnes said. Stephens County Hospital is among 60 rural hospitals in Georgia
that will share in a $5 M appropriation by the General Assembly during the
2002 legislative session and is designed to assist rural hospitals
with infrastructure
development, strategic planning, nontraditional health care delivery systems
and the provision of 24-hour emergency room services. “The office of
Rural Health Services is pleased to be able to coordinate this project as part
of our
continuing effort to improve access and quality care for residents in rural
Georgia,” said
Executive Director Isiah Lineberry.
All eligible hospitals must be located in
a rural community with population less than 35,000 residents, accept Medicaid
and Medicare patients, provide health care services to indigent patients
and operate a 24-hour emergency room. Projects considered for approval
included
expansion and/or renovation of emergency rooms, primary care centers, purchase
of diagnostic
equipment as well as facility repairs and enhancements. Funds may also be
used to recruit and retain health care professionals, an industry
experiencing workforce
shortages and one that is significantly affecting rural communities.
“We are very appreciative to the General Assembly for allocating these
funds to rural hospitals”, said Stephens County Hospital Administration
Ed Gambrell. Stephens County Hospital will use the award to purchase stretchers
for the soon-to-be expanded Emergency Department.
