Outpatient Diabetic Education

The Outpatient Diabetic Education Course is the premier educational tool for diabetics and their families. Held every other Wednesday, the goal of the program is to improve the health of diabetics and assist care takers in understanding the disease through education. In doing so, issues that face diabetics such as the use of medication, exercise and nutrition, how to properly use and read blood sugar monitoring equipment and how to recognize, prevent and manage the complications of diabetes are discussed.

Class participation is open to all diabetics and their support person and does not require a physician’s order but participants should preregister. Phone the Nutrition Department at Stephens County Hospital at 706.282.4338.

Childbirth Education

Our Childbirth Education Class combines prenatal education, prepared childbirth, surgical birth preparation, and infant care while in the hospital. This is not a Lamaze only class. We do, however, prepare you for labor and give you breathing and relaxation techniques. The class will cover the following:

  • Introduction to class, admission procedures, and a tour of the New Impressions Unit.
  • Vaginal deliveries - from admission to the delivery of your newborn.
  • Cesarean deliveries - when it is necessary, getting ready, delivery, and what to expect in the recovery period.
  • Infant Care - what to expect, circumcision information, breastfeeding information, and getting you ready to take your newborn home.

These classes should be taken between 30 to 36 weeks of pregnancy.

Call Pam Phillips at Stephens County Hospital at 706-282-4251 to register for these classes. Be sure to bring a pillow and a blanket on the Saturday session and on the last Monday session.
